At Blue Dog RV, we know that purchasing your first RV can become complicated due to the many types of RVs you have to choose from. We want to make this process easier for our customers, which is why we have put together a guide explaining the different types of RVs. RVs come in a variety of different types, sizes, and price ranges – making it easy for you to find the one that best fits your lifestyle. The most common types of RVs that you will find are Travel Trailers, Fifth Wheels, Toy Haulers, Class A Motorhomes, Class B Motorhomes, and Class C Motorhomes.
Towable vs. Motorized RVs
When on the hunt for a new RV, it is important to research the two main groups of RVs, towable and motorized, in order to decide which option is best for you.
Towable RVs must be pulled behind a truck or SUV. While traveling, passengers must remain in the truck or SUV due to the danger that can occur while occupying a pulled RV. A great benefit of a towable RV is having a separate vehicle that can easily be used to run to the grocery store or go sightseeing during your camping trips. Towable RVs are also more affordable than motorized RVs.
With a motorized RV, you do not have to worry about owning a truck or SUV as the RV is able to move down the road on its own. The advantages of a motorized RV are less set up, easier to drive, and the ability for passengers to ride in the RV while you drive.
Travel trailers are one of the most common types of RVs. Travel trailers are also known to be the most diverse type of RV as they come in a variety of layouts and sizes, ranging anywhere from 15 feet to 40 feet. Whether you are looking to go on two-person camping trips or bring the entire family along, you can find a travel trailer that fits your needs and budget.
Fifth wheels are the largest type of towable RV and are only able to be pulled by large pickup trucks. These RVs come with a hitch that allows the driver to connect a cargo attachment to the truck. Fifth wheel RVs are a great choice for those that want to remain in their RV full-time or long-term as they have large “house-like” living spaces.
Toy haulers were designed for those campers that want to bring their ‘toys’ such as golf carts, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles along for the weekend trip. The ‘toy box’ is usually located at the rear of the RV and has built-in cargo doors that convert to a ramp for easy loading and unloading. Many toy hauler owners also choose to use the toy hauler space as additional sleeping or entertainment space. Toy haulers can be a travel trailer, fifth wheel, or even a motorhome for those campers that need a motorized option.
Class A Motorhome
Class A motorhomes are the largest and most luxurious motorhomes. These motorhomes are built on commercial truck chassis and have a bus-like styling. Class A motorhomes are great for full-time living as they can be equipped with many features you’d find in a home such as a washer and dryer, full-sized furniture, and a satellite dish, depending on the one that you choose.
Class B Motorhome
Class B motorhomes are the smallest of the motorized RVs and can easily double as your everyday vehicle. These RVs feature all of the comfort and amenities you find in a larger RV, but in a compact size. With a Class B motorhome, you should be able to fit into pretty much any camping spot!
Class C Motorhome
Class C motorhomes are known for their raised sleeping or storage areas which extend over the cab of the RV. This sleeping area is perfect for kids or guests that won’t be sleeping over every night. Though similar to Class A motorhomes, Class C motorhomes are typically smaller and have less storage space.
